Idli is a popular South Indian breakfast dish served with coconut chutney & sambar.
This is a comforting & healthiest snack recipe made with rice & urad dal lentils that are soaked and fermented.
This is a vegan, no onion no garlic and nutritious breakfast recipe.

Rice – For making idli, you can use any short-grain rice or idli rice
Urad Dal – This helps acquire that airy texture to this idli.
Fenugreek Seeds – Helps to ferment the batter and adds a subtle taste to the idli batter.
Seasoning – Salt is added for seasoning.
Oil – Will require just a little amount of oil to de-mould the idlis.
Water – To soak and grind the rice and urad dal.

Step-by-Step Idli Recipe
How to make Idli
- Soak idli rice along with fenugreek seeds for 5-6 hours.
- Soak urad dal for 5-6 hours in a separate container.
- Once soaked, add the urdal dal and blend it to a fine paste use water to make a smooth paste.
- Urad dal batter is ready.
- Transfer it to a large mixing bowl.
- Add the soaked rice along with fenugreek and grind it to a fine paste.
- Add the rice mixture to the urad dal mixture.
- Mix both batters.
- Cover and let the batter ferment for about 8-9 hours. The batter will double in size and rise. Add salt as per taste.
- Grease the idli moulds with oil and pour the batter into idli moulds.
- Place the idli mould in the steamer or pressure cooker.
- Steam the idlis for 15 minutes or till the idli is fully cooked.
- Idli is ready. Serve with coconut chutney and tangy spicy sambar.
